Countries of Southern Cone
New statistics from Uruguay suggest the slaughter figures for 2012 will be the country’s lowest since 2003, reaching an estimated 1.9 million head. This would represent a decline of 100,000 head compared to last year, reported the international news site Leatherbiz.com
Actual figures show that in the period up to March 17, abattoirs in Uruguay had slaughtered 414,000 head of cattle, 5% down on the same period in 2011.
Industry commentators have said that livestock farmers in Uruguay are in the process of building up herd-sizes, which is one of the main factors for low slaughter levels. Farmers are taking these measures in response to recent high cattle prices.
In the Southern cone of South America slaughter levels are at historical lows with herd rebuilding taking priority in Argentina after the devastating drought of 2008-2009 and in neighboring Paraguay the foot and mouth outbreak of last September is still not completely resolved with abattoirs still lying idle.

All these factors combine to put upward pressure on hide prices making it more difficult for buyers and sellers to come to an agreement and during the recent APLF fair there was somewhat of a stalemate. Perhaps there may be some relief during the upcoming Lineapelle fair in Bologna.
