Gucci’s creative director, Frida Giannini, has been given the task to design a collection of eco or “sustainable” or “green” shoes which is to include models for both men and women and in both cases will be manufactured from biodegradable plastic.

The models for women are ballet type flats in varying tones of blush, taupe and black and are manufactured with the company’s signature “GG” on them.

For men the models are based around sneaker style with varying heights on the ankle with a biodegradable rubber sole while the uppers are manufactured from vegetable materials and calfskin which are all biodegradable. The tongue of the sports shoes will bear the Gucci logo in green and are designed from polyester which can also be recycled.

This line of eco footwear is part of a preview collection for fall 2012 and will be available in Gucci outlets throughout the world at the end of June.

This is the first time that Gucci has made a collection with materials that are all biodegradable so as to care for the environment.

Last year the brand’s labels were manufactured from biological material from seeds and the company is currently working to launch a line of sun glasses made from “liquid wood”.
