Nike has inked partnership with four other transnational corporations to further develop new sustainable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) materials that are made entirely from plant-based components.
The US sports group has teamed up with The Coca-Cola Company, Ford Motor Company, H J Heinz and Procter & Gamble for the PET Technology Collaborative (PTC) project.
PET plastic is used by all of the firms in the production of a wide range of products, including plastic bottles, packaging, clothing, footwear, fabrics and carpets – but plant-based versions of the material are known to have a significantly reduced environmental impact.
All of the corporations involved in the initiative have undertaken their own research and development projects that have established materials made partially from plants.
Together, the PTC will leverage this work in a bid to develop new technologies which develop their existing discoveries and create solutions made 100 per cent from plants.
