Interbrand's 2012 Best Global Green Brands survey named BMW in tenth place in terms of its green credentials, up two places from last year's report, while Apple remained in 13th, while Adidas climbed one to 22nd.
Coffee company Starbucks was one of the biggest risers as it jumped six spots to 36th, while Nike fell nine places to 26th despite signing-off on a handful of major sustainability policies in recent months.
The report took data from financial services firm Deloitte and combined it with consumer opinion of the brand to reach a final score.
Jez Frampton, global chief executive officer of Interbrand, believes that it is essential for a firm's green policies to be aligned with consumer perceptions to avoid either under-utilising the asset or facing accusations of 'greenwashing'.
"Sustainability has proven to be a strategic and profitable aspect of business and a brand strengthening asset," he said.
