The total value of the output of the Italian leather industry in 2011 was around EUR 5 billion, representing a recovery of the levels of 2005.
According to Italian tanners' association Unic, 1,300 companies were involved in the industry in the country last year, employing 18,000 people. In terms of volume, these companies produced 133 million square-metres of leather and 40,000 tonnes of sole leather. This makes 2011 the eighth consecutive year of negative growth in terms of volume of leather produced in Italy.
However, Unic has said that this decline in volume is mainly because Italian tanners are now producing less material at the lower end of the market.
